Sherwood Dies

Sherwood dies are for use in die stocks to cut external screw threads on metal rod, the split in the die allows the adjusting screws of the diestock to compress or expand the die to accommodate for slight variations in size of the material being threaded or die sharpness. Sherwood dies are available as Metric Fine, Metric Coarse, UNF, UNC, BA, BSF, BSW, BSPT, BSPF, NPT cutting threads all the dies are manufactured from HSS with precision ground threads to the applicable standard.

Sherwood Taps dimensions conform to ISO529 apart from NPT Forms which conform to ANSI 94.9. The Sherwood second tap is used after the taper tap has cut threads into the hole as far as possible. It tapers back 3 or 4 threads before a fully threaded diameter is reached. If threading a blind hole a Plug tap will be required to cut threads to the bottom of the hole.

Spiral Point Tap Metric Fine Straight Flute Ground Thread HSS

A spiral point tap has a chiselled point that pushes the metal chips ahead of the forming threads. This is useful when tapping through-holes (holes that extend through the work piece).

Spiral Point taps are not recommended for use in blind holes: the accumulation of chips can bind and break the tap.

Second Tap UNC (Unified Coarse) Long Shank Straight Flute Ground Thread HSS

Sherwood Die Nuts

Sherwood ground thread die nuts are suitable for repairing damaged or crossed threads and clearing swarf from threads. When using a die nut (on an existing thread) it is not necessary to apply the same level of precise initial alignment required to form a new thread (i.e. with a die) as the nut will follow the existing threads. They are supplied as hexagon drive allowing them to be turned by a standard spanner or adjustable wrench without the need for a special stock.
