Sherwood Taps

Sherwood HSS Taps are the general purpose option for thread cutting in most materials including steel, some stainless steels, cast irons and non-ferrous materials such as Aluminium, Brass and many others.

Manufactured with precision ground flutes for producing accurate thread forms, Sherwood Taps are available in all the popular thread forms and as straight Flute `Hand` Taps in 3 leads, Fluteless, Spiral Flute, or Spiral Point Machine Taps and also Long Series.

Sherwood Tap dimensions conform to ISO529 apart from NPT Forms which conform to ANSI 94.9. Straight Flute and Fluteless Taps are manufactured with a standard Bright Finish whereas the Machine Taps have an Oxidised Finish for best results dissipating the heat build-up associated with these applications.

Thread Forms are Class 2 medium fit tolerance.

Second Tap Metric Fine Straight Flute Ground Thread HSS

The Sherwood second tap is used after the taper tap has cut threads into the hole as far as possible. It tapers back 3 or 4 threads before a fully threaded diameter is reached. If threading a blind hole a Plug tap will be required to cut threads to the bottom of the hole.

Spiral Point Tap UNC (Unified Coarse) Ground Thread HSS

A spiral point tap has a chiselled point that pushes the metal chips ahead of the forming threads. This is useful when tapping through-holes (holes that extend through the work piece).

Spiral Point taps are not recommended for use in blind holes: the accumulation of chips can bind and break the tap.

Sherwood Extra Length Centre Drills HSS

Ground flute, for drilling centre holes on components prior to machining. Extra length drills particularly useful for drilling centre holes in recesses. Manufactured to BS328:Part 1:1986, DIN333A:ISO86, ISO2540, ISO2541.

Point angle: 118, helix angle: normal, web thickness: normal, relief angle: 10-20, tolerance of diameter: h8, tolerance of f11. Manufactured to BS328:Part 1:1986, DIN340RN, ISO494. Bright finish; drills are supplied in the as-ground condition and such tools are used generally in the machining of non-ferrous materials.

Sherwood dies are for use in die stocks to cut external screw threads on metal rod, the split in the die allows the adjusting screws of the diestock to compress or expand the die to accommodate for slight variations in size of the material being threaded or die sharpness. Sherwood dies are available as Metric Fine, Metric Coarse, UNF, UNC, BA, BSF, BSW, BSPT, BSPF, NPT cutting threads all the dies are manufactured from HSS with precision ground threads to the applicable standard.
