Sherwood Taps

Sherwood HSS Taps are the general purpose option for thread cutting in most materials including steel, some stainless steels, cast irons and non-ferrous materials such as Aluminium, Brass and many others.

Manufactured with precision ground flutes for producing accurate thread forms, Sherwood Taps are available in all the popular thread forms and as straight Flute `Hand` Taps in 3 leads, Fluteless, Spiral Flute, or Spiral Point Machine Taps and also Long Series.

Sherwood Tap dimensions conform to ISO529 apart from NPT Forms which conform to ANSI 94.9. Straight Flute and Fluteless Taps are manufactured with a standard Bright Finish whereas the Machine Taps have an Oxidised Finish for best results dissipating the heat build-up associated with these applications.

Thread Forms are Class 2 medium fit tolerance.

Plug Tap NPT (National Pipe Taper) Straight Flute Ground Thread HSS

The Sherwood Plug tap is used last after the Taper and Second tap have been used, when threading blind holes it cuts threads to the bottom of the hole.

Second Tap BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper) Straight Flute Ground Thread HSS

The Sherwood second tap is used after the taper tap has cut threads into the hole as far as possible. It tapers back 3 or 4 threads before a fully threaded diameter is reached. If threading a blind hole a Plug tap will be required to cut threads to the bottom of the hole.

Sherwood Jobber Drills Bright Finish HSS

General-purpose drills for steel, cast steel, grey cast iron, malleable cast iron, nickel brass, aluminium alloy and graphite. Point angle 118, helix angle: normal, web thickness: standard, relief angle: 10-20, tolerance of diameter: h8, tolerance of shank: f11. Manufactured to BS328/DIN338RN. Bright finish: drills with a bright finish are supplied in the as-ground condition and such tools are used generally in the machining of non-ferrous materials.

Sherwood Jobber Drills Steam Tempered HSS

Suitable for drilling steel, cast steel, alloyed and unalloyed, grey cast iron, spheroidal iron, sintered powder metal, German silver and graphite. Manufactured to BS328/DIN338RN.

Black Finish (W-Finish)
This is the most common surface finish and is the result of a steam tempering operation in which steam is passed over the product during a controlled tempering cycle, producing a black oxide layer. Black tools are generally recommended for ferrous applications where the oxide layer aids chip flow, helps to dissipate heat by retaining some coolant on the tool surface and also helps to prevent the tool from staining.

Tap Set BSP(F) (British Standard Pipe Fittings) Straight Flute Ground Thread HSS

Each set of Sherwood taps contain one taper, second and plug lead tap:

Sherwood HSS Taper Taps are used to start cutting the thread. They are tapered back from the end 6 to 10 threads before a fully threaded diameter is reached. This allows the tap to be positioned easily and correctly before it starts to cut the thread.

The Second Tap is used after the taper tap has cut threads into the hole as far as possible. It tapers back 3 or 4 threads before full thread diameter is reached.

The Plug Tap cuts threads to the bottom of a blind hole. It is only necessary to use the full set of taps when a blind hole is to be tapped.
