High teeth per inch (TPI) blades are slower cutting and produce a better edge finish. Low teeth per inch blades are faster cutting but produce coarser cuts. Different materials will also give different edge finishes depending on the material and direction the grain. When cutting certain metals, lubricant or grease may be required to reduce friction and dissipate heat. Various techniques can be employed to prevent splintering of cut edges on wood, especially laminated materials. These include the use of an anti-splinter guard. This is a plastic insert that locates in the jigsaw base plate reducing the gap around the blade and reduces the splinter area. Another technique is to score a guide line on the wood, this creates a pre-cut line that must then be followed accurately. Anothertechnique is to place adhesive tape over the proposed cut line, this holds the material in place whilst the cut is being made.
